Battle's End

Region:
USA
Style:
Contemporary
Composer:
Marcum, Travis and 2 students from Gardner Betts Juvenile Justice Center

Co-written with two students at Gardner Betts Juvenile Justice Center (anonymously recognized here as K and C), “Battle’s End” is an early level 2 piece that requires students to read the first, second and third strings. The piece uses quarter, eighth, and dotted half-notes. Guitars 1 & 2 set up with p on string 3, i on string 2, and m on string 1. Guitar 1 only plays notes on the second string. Guitar 2 plays the second and third strings. Guitar 3 plays notes on the bass strings. Teach these by rote using the notation as reinforcement.

“Battle’s End” features two repeated rhythmic patterns, specific articulation, and variety of expressive devices. In keeping with the vigorous character of the piece, demand fantastic tone and punchy staccato notes.

Keep in mind that, even though this is a carefully constructed technical piece of music, the primary goal of this - and every - piece of music should be joyful, expressive music making.
