Hicaz Türkü Fincanı Taştan Oyarlar (They carve the cup from stone)

Region:
Turkey
Style:
Traditional
Composer:
Anon. arr. Kaya

This is an arrangement of one of the most famous folk songs in Turkey. It uses the Makam Hicaz. This requires us to use the unusual key signature of c-sharp and b-flat. The Usul Curcuna uses the time signature 10/8 played in a fast tempo. Notice the rhythmic groupings and accents featured throughout the piece. In the beginning, measures alternate between groups of 3+2+2+3 and 2+3+2+3. You may ask students to count each measure in groups of 2 or 3. For example, measure one would be counted- 1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2, 1-2-3. Ask students to pay close attention to the accents, color changes (pizz. and arco) and dynamics. About the arranger: Born in Istanbul, Turkey, Kaya began his interest in classical guitar at the age of six with his father, Dr. Mehmet Refik Kaya. In addition to winning many major classical guitar competitions, earning Masters and Doctorate degrees from prestigious Universities, and touring as a concert soloist, Kaya is a prolific composer. He has written music for solo guitar, violin, piano, string trio and many other combinations of performers. Learn more at celilrefikkaya.com.
