Lagrima, by Francisco Tárrega, is one of the most recognizable solo pieces in classical guitar repertoire. For this arrangement, you will need players who are at least at level 5 for part one. Otherwise, there are numerous combination levels to choose from. The melody is paramount in this piece. It is always located in part 1. There are a myriad of dynamic and phrase markings that give Lagrima its charm. It is important that all parts move together dynamically and that everyone’s tone is round and robust. When conducting, take time at the breath marks and make sure your pattern is smooth and legato.

Cultural/Historical Context:

Francisco Tárrega is one of the most significant composers for the classical guitar. Composing primarily in the late 1800s in Spain, most of his pieces are considered staples in guitar repertoire today. He taught some of the most significant players of his time and also arranged many Romantic period works for solo guitar. Have the students do further research into Francisco Tárrega.
