Mehtaplı bir Gecede (Moonlit Nights)

Region:
Turkey
Style:
Contemporary
Composer:
Ege, Femhi arr. Celil Refik Kaya

About the music: The Turkish war of Independence brought many changes to the culturally rich country. Led by the first Turkish president, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the monarchy was abolished and the Republic of Turkey was established in 1923. Atatürk and the new government instituted many reforms, incorporating various elements of Western culture and customs. One of those Western imports was the Tango. Turkish composers quickly adapted the style, composing new tangos close to the heart of Turkish people. The style became an essential part of the Turkish music repertoire. This tango was written by Fehmi Ege (1903-1978) in İstanbul. Mehtaplı bir Gecede is now one of the most famous tangos of this era. Guitar 1 offers the opportunity to hone the level 8 skill of upper position reading. Most of the part in position IV, with some sections in position I. Ask students to carefully observe the left hand fingering, and to write in a right hand fingering in any challenging sections. Guitars 2 and 3 require level 4 players. As with all student repertoire, continually place emphasis on the details that make a piece come to life. These details include dynamics, articulation, tempo fluctuations and togetherness. About the arranger: Born in Istanbul, Turkey, Kaya began studying classical guitar at the age of six with his father, Dr. Mehmet Refik Kaya. In addition to winning many major classical guitar competitions, earning Masters and Doctorate degrees from prestigious Universities, and touring as a concert soloist, Kaya is a prolific composer. He has written and published music for solo guitar, violin, piano, string trio and many other combinations of performers. Learn more at celilrefikkaya.com.
