Sarabande BWV 997

Region:
Germany
Style:
Baroque
Composer:
Bach, J.S.

This Sarabande from the second Lute Suite by J.S. Bach is a challenging slow piece in A minor. Guitar one is the most difficult part moving freely across positions, however, each part requires great attention to articulation and style as well as proficiency with many different techniques. Begin by taking very small phrases listening for precise rhythmic accuracy and articulation. The opening figure in part one is mimicked by part three in the very next measure and should sound the same. Stress legato playing and shape the phrases starting with the bass line. Take time to analyze which notes should not ring over in each part and address this with the students. This is especially true with part three which should mute open bass notes with the right thumb.
