Tannenbaum Variations

Originally a German folk song, the most well known lyrics to this tune were written by Ernst Anshütz in 1824. The song doesn’t specifically reference a Christmas tree. The words describe the evergreen fir tree (in German Tannenbaum). In this case, the fir tree is a symbol for faithfulness and dependability.

This level 5 arrangement features the theme, 4 variations and a reprise of the original tune. You may wish to perform the theme alone, or in combination with one or more variations. Each variation includes a character indication. Ask students to think about how each character fits into the holiday season. As always, emphasize beautiful tone and expressive playing.

Technical concerns:
Even for advanced players, it is useful to teach problem passages by rote. In addition to a clear technical explanation, provide a good model of complex rhythms (for example triplets in var. 1). Students may also need to isolate and practice the few slurs in this piece.
