Traditional Yiddish Folk Song

This arrangement is for level 3 players, but it includes skills that will be worked on in subsequent levels. The bass notes in the guitar 3 part should be learned by rote, using the notation as reinforcement. Guitar 2 players are required to play three note chords by flicking the i finger back and forth over the strings. This effect mimics the balalaika mentioned throughout the song. Make sure the i strokes are light and quick, carefully observing the dynamics. The score suggests that all players learn all three parts, repeating the tune three times.

Historical Notes
This traditional Yiddish folk song originates in Russia. The lyrics to the song present several riddles that a young man poses to a young woman to test her viability as a mate. The strophic form of the original alternates several verses with a repeated chorus.

The lyrics to the first two verses and the chorus are:

Verse 1:
A young lad stands, and he thinks?
Thinks and thinks the whole night through?
Whom to take and not to shame?
Whom to take and not to shame

Chorus:
Tumbala, Tumbala, Tumbalalaika?
Tumbala, Tumbala, Tumbalalaika?
Tumbalalaika, strum balalaika
Tumbalalaika, may we be happy

Verse 2:
Girl, girl, I want to ask of you?
What can grow, grow without rain?
What can burn and never end?
What can yearn, cry without tears?
