Student Focus: The Listener

In this video, Dr. Duke addresses how learners can acquire the fundamental mechanical skills in the most effective way. Many music educators focus on having their students learn technical skills in isolation, only to find that students do not always transfer the isolated skills to a musical context. This introductory video explains the importance of having students focus on expressive music making from the start.

Dr. Robert Duke is the Marlene and Morton Meyerson Centennial Professor and Head of Music and Human Learning at The University of Texas at Austin where he is University Distinguished Teaching Professor, Elizabeth Shatto Massey Distinguished Fellow in Teacher Education, and Director of the Center for Music Learning. He is also professor of psychology at the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles.

Dr. Duke addresses the application of skills and their importance to student focus.
