Music and Joyfulness

Dr. Robert Duke from the University of Texas at Austin discusses the importance of joy in music making.

Dr. Robert Duke is the Marlene and Morton Meyerson Centennial Professor and Head of Music and Human Learning at The University of Texas at Austin where he is University Distinguished Teaching Professor, Elizabeth Shatto Massey Distinguished Fellow in Teacher Education, and Director of the Center for Music Learning. He is also professor of psychology at the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles.

Joy in music making is a fundamental aspect of the teaching approach in GuitarCurriculum.com. Naturally, when a student picks up an instrument they have an expectation that it will bring them a sense of joy and self-satisfaction. When music learning is goal-direct and the outcome is a joyful experience, it shapes students' attitudes towards learning. This is achieved by setting up small solvable problems for you students in which the solution produces a desirable musical outcome that was previously out of reach.
