Error Correction

Dr. Robert Duke from the University of Texas at Austin explains the process of error correction in musical learning. In the next video Dr. Duke outlines the importance of Music and Joyfulness.

Dr. Robert Duke is the Marlene and Morton Meyerson Centennial Professor and Head of Music and Human Learning at The University of Texas at Austin where he is University Distinguished Teaching Professor, Elizabeth Shatto Massey Distinguished Fellow in Teacher Education, and Director of the Center for Music Learning. He is also professor of psychology at the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles.

Learning is error correction. In this video, Dr. Duke describes error correction as the discrimination that learners make between their musical intentions and their actual behavior. Often times, teachers mistakenly give students multiple verbal directives and have them repeat the musical behavior until the teacher is satisfied. A more effective approach provides students with the opportunity to find their own solutions to a precise problem. Allowing students several repetitions while making discriminations between the different repetitions is the key to learning and transfer.
