Holland, Justin
Justin Holland (1819-1887) was a classical guitarist, teacher and civil rights activist. Holland was born to free black parents in Norfolk County, Virginia. He attended Oberlin College during a time when very few African-Americans were able to pursue higher education. Holland was a respected performer and teacher. In addition to many arrangements, he wrote a number of original compositions featuring the guitar.
This arrangement includes parts for players at a variety of levels. The best version will include players on parts 1a, 2a, and 3. Travis Marcum made the original arrangement for Dr. Kim Perlak’s Justin Holland project in 2010. This version came about in anticipation of Black History month in 2015.
