This is an arrangement of one of the most famous folk songs in Turkey. It uses the Makam Hicaz. This requires us to use the unusual key signature of c-sharp and b-flat. The Usul Curcuna uses the time signature 10/8 played in a fast tempo. Notice the rhythmic groupings and accents featured throughout the piece. In the beginning, measures alternate between groups of 3+2+2+3 and 2+3+2+3. You may ask students to count each measure in groups of 2 or 3. For example, measure one would be counted- 1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2, 1-2-3. Ask students to pay close attention to the accents, color changes (pizz. and arco) and dynamics.
